At Hastings Manufacturing, we don’t manufacture anything but piston rings—and for good reason. Doing so keeps us focused on what we do best, along with the engine builders who rely on superior precision and performance.

One of those piston rings is the Flex-Vent® oil ring, the most successful oil ring in the last 60 years. Hastings was the first to make it—and today, it’s the standard to which all oil rings are compared. Most of the original equipment gasoline and flex-fuel engines produced today use a Flex-Vent® oil ring, one that’s manufactured on the principles of our original design. 

Stainless Steel Nitride PVD Racing Rings

Stainless Steel Nitride PVD Racing Rings are the perfect match for extreme performance applications. The stainless steel top rings are gas-nitride and coated through a physical vapor deposition (PVD) process. The CrN coating has extremely high adhesive qualities, is extremely scuff resistant, and has a very low coefficient of friction—making for greater power output.

The second rings in the series are Napier-faced, high-strength ductile iron. The Napier profile provides outstanding cylinder wall oil film control and reduced oil consumption. Our famous Flex-Vent oil control ring completes this top-of-the-line series.

Tough Guy Top Rings

Tough Guy top rings feature either a barrel face (which offers center edge contact for fast sealing) or a torsional profile, which creates a twist where the wall contacts the ring’s lower edge. A torsional profile also provides excellent sealing of compression gases and results in less friction and fast break in.

Tough Guy Second Groove Cast and Ductile Iron Rings

Every Tough Guy Racing Ring set includes an intermediate second groove ring made of proprietary shell-mold cast iron. It features a reverse twist, torsional bevel taper face, or ductile Napier for positive oil control and immediate seating. A modified wall thickness reduces friction and provides excellent cylinder wall conformability.

Hastings Flex-vent® Oil Control Rings

All Tough Guy Racing Ring sets are engineered exclusively with Flex-Vent® oil ring technology to minimize friction, thus improving flexibility and high rpm oil control. The Flex-Vent expander oil ring is energized by two 1070 steel rails, which receive uniform pressure from the stainless steel expander to assure positive oil control. The three-piece design allows the rails to be manufactured with a small cross-sectional area for better conformability to the bores of today’s low-friction engines. The rail’s thin wall contact also allows for quick break-in time. Hastings’ rails are chrome plated to extend ring life.

Steel Series

Hastings Tough Guy's Steel Moly (SM prefix) and Tough Guy Steel and Tough Guy Steel Chrome (SC prefix) top rings are made of highly durable alloy steel coated with either plasma moly impact-resistant alloy or chrome. The alloy steel material allows for reductions in compression ring cross sectional dimensions (axial height and radial width). Along with reducing the engine’s reciprocating mass, these rings can be fitted to the latest designs of lighter, reduced deck-height pistons with restricted ring belt areas. The top and 2nd rings in the series are offered in increasingly thinner axial heights. With the top barrel faced steel ring, a torsional reverse-twist taper cast iron or Napier-faced ductile iron 2nd groove ring and Hastings Flex-Vent® oil ring, the Steel Series is a must for serious sport compact and late model racers.

Steel Advantages

  • Used in the most demanding, high-compression, high-stress, and high-temperature ring applications
  • Nearly twice as strong as high-tensile ductile iron
  • Allows for thinner, lighter ring designs that maintain better sealing at high rpms by staying seated against the groove bottom
  • Reduced side wear and extended life

Chrome Coating Advantages

  • Hard, wear resistant, and low friction
  • Prevents bore scuffing when using high-tensile iron and steel rings
  • Can be used to coat the face and sides of rings (triple chrome)
  • Preferred over moly in dusty environments where the porosity of moly can trap contaminates
  • Primarily for use on cast iron bores

Premium Ductile Series

Our Premium Ductile Series set presents the best balance between performance and cost—making it our best-selling ring set. Top rings are made of high-tensile premium ductile iron, coated with either plasma moly impact-resistant alloy or abrasive-resistant, highly adhesive chrome. Premium Ductile has the advantage of highly malleable Ductile iron, offering the durability to withstand high temperatures and pressures, including abnormal combustion events (i.e., detonation and pre-ignition). The top ring is torsional positive twist, packaged with our reverse twist, taper-faced cast iron or ductile napier 2nd groove.

Premium Ductile Moly (2M) and Chrome (2C) Series include top rings made of proprietary shell-mold, ductile, high-tensile strength, premium cast iron. They are coated with plasma moly impact-resistant alloy or chrome. Premium Ductile Series (2M5500, 2M8500, 2C5500 series).

Claimer Racing Ring Series

Claimer Cast

As our most economical set of racing rings, Claimer Cast (C prefix) rings feature top and 2nd groove compression rings made of our proprietary shell-mold cast iron that’s manganese phosphate coated. Top rings are Torsional Positive-Twist and 2nd rings are Torsional Reverse-Twist taper face.

  • Provide excellent conductivity in the transfer of combustion heat to the cylinder walls
  • Durable gray iron due to Hastings’ graphite structure and distinctive alloys
  • Lubricating graphite materials allow rings to function without expensive coatings

Claimer Moly

Claimer Moly rings (CM prefix), are Claimer rings kicked up a notch. Claimer Moly top rings are made of our proprietary shell-mold cast iron with plasma moly impact-resistant alloy, providing a hard-yet-lubricating, low-friction structure. The plasma moly coating improves wear resistance, reduces scuffing, traps lubricating oil, and is compatible with a wide range of cylinder bore materials. Top rings are Torsional Positive twist and 2nd rings are Torsional Reverse-Twist taper face.
